What is PCL Material?
PCL (Polycaprolactone) is a synthetic, aliphatic polyester. It is produced from petroleum derivatives through a ring-opening polymerization process, but its greatest appeal lies in its excellent biodegradability.
Unlike traditional plastics, PCL can be gradually broken down by microorganisms in natural environments like soil and sludge into water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter, ultimately returning to nature. This makes it an environmentally friendly "green material." Furthermore, it possesses outstanding biocompatibility, being non-toxic and non-irritating to human tissues, which opens the door for its applications in the medical field.
Core Properties and Advantages of PCL Material
PCL's status as a star material is thanks to a series of exceptional properties:
A. Low-Temperature Processability: PCL has a melting point of only around 60°C, much lower than materials like PLA or PET. This means processing it requires less energy and places gentler demands on the heating system of PCL sheet extrusion equipment.
B. High Toughness and Flexibility: PCL is one of the toughest known biodegradable materials. Its products are resistant to brittleness and offer excellent impact resistance.
C. Good Compatibility: PCL is easily blended with natural polymers like starch and cellulose or other biodegradable polyesters (e.g., PLA, PBAT) to modify the properties of other materials or reduce costs.
D. Controlled Degradation Rate: Complete degradation of PCL typically takes 1-2 years. This timeframe is perfectly suited for medical applications requiring medium-term implants (e.g., sutures) or packaging products requiring greater durability.
What is Low-temperature Thermoplastic PCL Sheet or Board?
Low-temperature thermoplastic board is a special synthetic polymer polyester, a new type of polymer material processed by a series of physical and chemical methods. Its molecules are in a dry environment at room temperature (10-30ºC) In a stable state, the material becomes transparent after softening at a temperature of 65-70°C. It can be stretched and shaped, and it can restore rigidity at room temperature. It is breathable, water-proof, completely transparent to X-rays, non-toxic, odorless, non-irritating to the skin, and has biodegradability.
